Hand knotted especially for you in the ways of the Azilal tribes who for centuries have traded their goods and crafts in the town of Azilal in Central Morocco. This bustling village is known as an important place for Arabs and Imazighen (Berbers) to mingle and share their cultures with one another.

Your made to order rug will be created knot by knot with ancient techniques passed down from mother to daughter through the generations. Azilal rugs are created from virgin wool and made using one knotted line and one or two woven lines. Almost always the background will be raw wool and thus white or cream, like the sheep it came from, and then decorated with intense colors from natural or synthetic dyes. Azilal rugs bring a light and playful mood with them wherever they go and they are just such a nice way of adding this air of joy to any room without ever overpowering the space.

Azilal rugs are the definition of youth and freedom. Freedom because the shapes are eccentric and youth because the colours are never muted nor serious. Their white backgrounds give contrast to the childlike drawings often with motifs of the lozenge (diamond) shape. In Moroccan culture, the lozenge is a sign of protection against the evil eye. The Berbers use these symbols not only in their rugs but they also paint them on the doors of their houses. Other ancient berber symbols include that of the donkey, which is arguably the most important animal to the Amazigh people inhabiting the steep hills of the Atlas Mountains.
