Hand knotted in the ways of the Zanafi tribes who for centuries have served as the keepers of the Draa Valley near the town of Ouarzazate in the Drâa-Tafilalet region. This part of Morocco is known as “the mouth of the desert“ with the desolate Sahara to the south and the harsh Atlas Mountains to the north.

This rug was created knot by knot with ancient techniques passed down from mother to daughter through the generations. Zanafi rugs are created from virgin wool, most often in black, white and grey as the sheep that contributed the wool to these masterpieces, but in the last few decades they have started to appear in all sorts of natural colours.

The Draa Valley gets very hot in the summer with temperatures soaring above 40°C but winters get biting cold with freezing conditions. Because of these extreme changes the Zanafi tribes needed a type of rug that would be useful in all kinds of weather and applications. This is why traditionally Zanafi kilims have featured a flat weave for the desert on one side and a long pile inspired by the Beni Ourain mountain tribes on the other side. However, these days with global trade leaving consumers spoilt for choice with long pile rugs from many other tribes, Zanafi kilims often come as flatweave on both sides, making them the perfect alternative for rooms where a cooler and easier to clean rug is prefered.
