Azilal rugs are the definition of youth and freedom. Freedom because the shapes are eccentric and youth because the colors are never muted nor serious. Their white backgrounds give contrast to the childlike drawings often with motifs of the lozenge (diamond) shape. In Moroccan culture, the lozenge is a sign of protection against the evil eye. The Berbers use these symbols not only in their rugs but they also paint them on the doors of their houses. Other ancient berber symbols include that of the donkey, which is arguably the most important animal to the Amazigh people inhabiting the steep hills of the Atlas Mountains.
